PHARMACY-BASED clinical services

We’re excited to help pharmacies make the move into creating sustainable clinical services. Whether you set up a cash-only respiratory virus testing program or you have a full service chronic disease management program that bills insurance, KPhA will be by your side. This site will continue to evolve to include tools and information your pharmacy will need to provide and sustain these services in your community.

If you are interested in billing medical insurance for clinical services, there are several steps to take. Expect the process to take at least 90 days, so you can get started even if you're not yet ready to bill claims.

  • Credentialing and enrollment - prove that you are the provider you say you are, then contract with an insurance company to provide benefits for their members
  • Choose a medical billing vendor - just like physicians can't bill prescription insurance with their EMR, you won't be able to bill medical insurance with your dispensing software without a little help.

Pharmacy-based Test & Treat

SB200 became law in July 2022 and allows for Kansas pharmacists to test and treat for influenza, strep A pharyngitis, and uncomplicated UTIs. The statewide protocols were written by the Kansas Board of Pharmacy's Collaborative Drug Therapy Management (CDTM) committee, which is comprised of three pharmacists and three physicians. The CDTM meetings are open to the public - check here for upcoming meetings. Please carefully read through the protocols as well as the Board's FAQ document before starting any new clinical service.

Diabetes Prevention Program

DPP is a Medicare Part B program that helps seniors at high risk for diabetes prevent or delay their diagnosis. A trained health coach facilitates group classes on physical activity, healthy eating, and overcoming health challenges. Participants complete 22-26 classes over the course of a year and coaches are paid a bonus if participants lose 5% of their body weight during the year.

Diabetes Self-Management Education

DSME provides an amazing opportunity for pharmacists to be paid for clinical services. Medicare Part B patients are eligible for 10 hours of diabetes education after a diagnosis of diabetes, then 2 hours every year thereafter. This service can only be provided by an accredited site. Not one near you? Consider starting a site!
