Overview
This course is intended to meet the requirements of the Kansas Board of Pharmacy’s statewide protocols for point of care test & treat services, including influenza, streptococcal pharyngitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections. This course will provide an overview of point of care testing workflow, products, test types, and counseling points. Opportunities for reimbursement for these services will be presented and evaluated


Details
This course offers 4 hours of live ACPE CE. Participants are required to document live training with experienced clinician after the webinar.

  • Suggested to connect with a pharmacist with NASPA Point of Care Test and Treat Certificate – connect with Amanda to find someone near you
  • Board of pharmacy will allow for other clinician types experienced in this testing to sign off on the live training – MD, RN, PA, etc.

    1. Design a point of care screening program for use in your pharmacy
    2. Evaluate different billing methods of point of care tests to create a sustainable pharmacy-based point of care testing program
    3. Explain infection control methods to protect patients and pharmacy staff from infectious diseases 
    4. Explain medical necessity and its importance in point of care testing
    5. Compare and contrast different types of point of care tests used for point of care screening and monitoring
    6. Complete a safe and accurate physical assessment of a patient presenting for a point of care test
    7. Perform specimen collection in a safe and accurate way
    8. Analyze and act on the results of point of care tests
    9. Counsel a patient on the results of their point of care screening test

  • Instructor

    Amanda Applegate, PharmD, BCACP,  the director of practice development for the Kansas Pharmacists Association, teaches the live portion of this class. She has 10 years of experience practicing in the community pharmacy setting, including hundreds of biometric screening clinics. Specializing in fingerstick whole blood draws, she's been called a vampire more times than she can count.

  • Accreditation Information

    This class is ACPE-accredited through the Kentucky Pharmacy Education and Research Foundation, Inc. (ACPE Universal Activity #0143-9999-23-065-L01-P/T). Credit must be claimed within 30 days of completing the program. Expiration Date: Aug. 1, 2026.
